Here in Cyprus we celebrated Bloomsday at the Irish Residence with an event organised by the Irish Embassy which saw members of the Cyprus Ireland Association and others from both communities come together to celebrate this great literary event on the 20th of June (a few days late for practical reasons). There was a display on the life and times of James Joyce and selected readings from Ulysses. It was a beautiful balmy night perfect to relax with a glass of wine while being treated to such a display of eloquence by the readers on the night.
Bloomsday is a celebration that takes place both in Dublin and around the world. It celebrates Thursday 16 June 1904, which is the day depicted in James Joyce’s novel Ulysses. The day is named after Leopold Bloom, the central character in Ulysses. The novel follows the life and thoughts of Leopold Bloom and a host of other characters – real and fictional – from 8am on 16 June 1904 through to the early hours of the following morning.
